What are dahlia seeds?

Are you interested in having surprises in your garden everyday? Then growing dahlias from seed is for you. I had record seed production this year and want to share these surprises with you.

Each dahlia seeds is a unique a combination of the genetic variation from the seed parent (mom) and the pollen plant (dad). So, seedlings  do not look like their parents. They can have traits that resemble their parents, but they can also look totally different in color, form, and size. That’s what they are so fun to grow!

What will you receive?

Each packet contains 30 dahlia seeds grown and harvested on the farm. They are pollinator’s preference seeds, meaning the bugs, birds, and wind did the pollination. They will range from single, to anemones, to doubles, and small to large. What beauty will you grow?

Growing dahlias from seeds how to:

Growing dahlia seeds is easier than you may think. There are several ways to do it, but here is my preferred method.

1. Sprinkle the seeds in a single layer on a moist paper towel and cover with another moist paper towel.

2. Place paper towel in a gallon ziplock bag and seal. Leave bag flat on the kitchen counter.

3. Seeds will sprout anywhere between 2 to 20 days, some can take longer.

4. Make sure to check the seeds every day for sprouting. You don’t want them growing too far into the paper towel because the root can be damaged if you have to pull them out.

5. Then take that fuzzy white root and put it into a small pot (2”) with good moist potting soil and have the leaves or remainder of the seed pod sticking out just above the soil.

6. Place your newly potted seedling under lights, which should be positioned about 2” above your wee little plant.

7. Once your plant is about 4” with at least two sets of true leaves, you can pot up to a 4” pot or place directly in the garden.

8. But, before you put your baby plant in the garden you need to get them adjusted to being outside.

9. Place your seedling outside in indirect sunlight for a few days and then slowly increase the amount of direct sunlight it gets for a week.

10. Your plant is now ready to thrive in the garden and the fun begins!
